Nicholas Roerich (also known as Nikolay Konstantinovich Rerikh & Nikolay Konstantinovich Ryorikh) was born on 10/9/1874 in Saint Petersburg, Russia & died on 12/13/1947 in Nagar, India.

His mother was a notary & his father was an attorney. His parents often entertained artists, writers & scientists, which created a stimulating environment that sparked many of Roerich’s interests.
He attended the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts for drawinng & the Saint Petersburg University to study law.

He married, moved to Finland, & then to the United States where he & his wife founded the Agni Yoga Society.  He founded the Master Institute of United Arts in New York City, which later became the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York City.

In 1923 they began exploring India & its adjoining regions.  In 1928, they established a home & also established the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute, located in Himachal Pradesh -- a state in India located in northern India in the western Himalayan Mountains.

Nicholas Roerich was a mystic, a phillosopher, a painter, writer & theatrical (opera, ballet) scenic designer, & amateur archeologist.  He is famous for his paintings of the Himalayas. His work reveals the influence of Russian & Nordic folk tales, iconography, his interest in eastern religion & his travels in India, Tibet & Mongolia.

Roerich was prolific, creating over 7,000 works in oil, gouache & tempera, as well as a series of stage sets, some monumental, for the Ballets Russes.  He was known for his efforts to protect art from the ravages of war, notably his creation of the “Pax Cultura”, for which he was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
